Algeria : President Offers To Mediate In Mali

During a speech to the national press on July 18, 2025, the Algerian Head of State affirmed his availability in search for peace in the north.
Algeria's President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has expressed willingness to mediate in the Malian crisis, aiming to facilitate dialogue and restore stability in the region. Algeria, a regional power with significant influence in the Sahel, sees itself as a key player in resolving the conflict. This initiative is part of Algeria's broader regional strategy to maintain its status and address the complex challenges facing Mali and the entier Sahel region. Speaking on Friday to the national press, President Tebboune said his country will only become involved as a mediator between the Bamako regime and the northern rebels on one condition; that an official request is made by the Malian government.
In a relax and eloquent speech, the President added that, even though Algeria is willing to help, his country will not welcome any Russian mercenaries at the Algerian border, “Even if Russia is a friendly country, Algeria has expressed its rejection of the presence of mercenaries on its borders,” he reiterated. Though at press time, the ruling military government had not yet made any statement with regards to the offer, most observers are of the opinion that Bamako authorities are not prepared to take such a step. There are many differences between the two countries. For two years, Mali has denounced the Algiers agreements that it signed with armed groups in the north thanks to Algerian mediation.
