“Alliances Are Pushed By Interest”

What reading do you make of the political alliances during a Presidential election as is currently the case with Cameroon’s political landscape.
The reading on the political alliance in Cameroon is very complex and when you look at it carefully, you recognise that there are certain factors that will push for alliances. Alliances are pushed by interest. In addition, the ethic factor also contributes to the alliances. You also need to understand that as far as these alliances are concerned in the political landscape, we have what we call the old alliances and in that, we have the Presidential majority. Those who form the Presidential majority, their interest is known even though we have some of them who have backed out. With the Presidential majority, we have individuals who are thinking about how they can make a name from the main political party. Some of these candidatures submitted are there just to weaken the opposition and therefore we can be able to say that the numerous candidates and political parties gearing up towards the Presidential election are there to animate the political landscape and not really to be able to gain grounds. I was talking with one of the aspirants who jokingly made a statement that this is an opportunity for him to be popular. This is the notion that most of them have and this notion cannot drive them forward.
What are the possible motivating factors for these political alliances?
As per the reasons for the alliances, you have the aspect of interest and ethnicity. This is an important factor because it is easy to see a Muslim want to form an alliance with another Muslim. Some body from the East will want to form an alliance with somebody from the same region, just like somebody from the North West. With these factors, you will notice that one aspect is very glaring, the fact that politics is driven by intriques and interest. And by interest here, we mean that individuals have their egoistic tendencies and would not want to form an alliance with any other political party for personal reasons.
