Burkina Faso : Jihadists Kill Over 50 Soldiers

The attack that occurred on Tuesday in the north of the country has been attributed to the Islamic state group.

Reports from Burkina Faso over 50 soldiers have been killed by jihadists on July 29, 2025 following an attack by an armed group on a military base in the town of Dargo (Boulsa Province), in the northern region of the country. The information was first made public by the community leader and a resident. The two sources, who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they feared repercussions said, “About 100 militants participated in the attack, and that the gunmen burned and looted the base after the killings” they reiterated. 
Though the Burkinabe government is yet to confirm the number of dead, the Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin group (JNIM), has claimed responsibility for the attack at the military base. JNIM, one of several armed groups conducting attacks across West Africa, has been blamed for hundreds of civilian and military deaths. Burkina Faso is witnessing a surge in attacks by armed groups who are in control of some major towns in the north, with targets being against civilians and security forces. Despite the redrawing of political and military strategies by the military leader, Ibrahim Traore and the numerous mobilisation efforts, the situation is deteriorating with the Islamist group gaining ground. The worsening violence has deepened political instability in the country. Captain Ibrahim Traore has been struggling to contain the escalating insurgency or reclaim areas held by armed groups.
