Russia-Ukraine Crisis : Putin-Zelensky Summit In Gestation

The information was made public on August 18, 2025 by President Trump after a telephone conversation with the Russian President, Vladimir Putin.

After hosting President Volodymyr Zelensky and allies on Monday, things seem to be unfolding towards the right direction. A few hours after the enriching Summit in Washington DC, President Trump had a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during which they agreed on the need for a Putin-Zelensky Summit in the days ahead. Though the exact date and venue has not yet been agreed, experts from all the parties involved have not only welcomed the idea, but are already working on the agenda and modalities of the meeting that is expected to pave the way for durable peace.  The tête-à-tête between the two leaders will be followed by a trilateral meeting which will include the US, Russia and Ukrainian leaders to finalise what might have been agreed on.
During the meeting between President Trump, Zelensky and European allies at the White House, the leaders discussed security guarantees for Ukraine, but not the redrawing of territory. President Trump did not rule out sending US troops into Ukraine to help maintain a potential peace deal. President Zelensky hailed the talks as a “significant step” toward ending the war. One of the most salient divergence during the discussions was on ceasefire. While European leaders, including Zelensky, see a ceasefire as a necessary condition for negotiations to end the war, President Trump is more focused on securing a peace deal, a position the Kremlin seems to be echoing after the Alaska meeting.
