Philemon Yang : Charismatic, Multi-talented International Leader

Cameroon’s former Prime Minister and current Grand Chancellor of National Orders prepares to be elected President of the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations.


His Excellency Philemon Yang who will this June 6, 2024 be vying for election to the prestigious position of the President of the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations is one of the rare multi-talented and experienced leaders Cameroon has ever produced. He will make abundant use of his leadership skills at the national and international levels, coupled with his professional and academic backgrounds to translate his vision and commitment to concrete results at the UN.
Before getting prominence at the international realm having been endorsed by the African continent as their lone candidate to the position of the President of the 79th General Assembly of the UN, Philemon Yang had climbed the various administrative and leadership rungs in Cameroon’s public administration. At the moment, he is the Grand Chancellor of National Orders. Before occupying the position, Philemon Yang served as Cameroon’s Prime Minister Head of Government from 2009 to 2019. The position came after that of the Minister, Assistant Secretary General at the Presidency from 2004 to 2009. Shortly after graduating from the National School of Administration and Magistracy (ENAM), he was appointed Vice Minister of Territorial Administration, a position he held from 1975 to 1979. He, in 1979 was promoted to the position of Minister of Mines and Energy and he served in the position up to 1984.
Philemon Yang started being fully involved in the international realm when in 1984 he was appointed Cameroon’s Ambassador to Canada and he served in the position that later on became High Commissioner when Cameroon joined membership of the Commonwealth up to 2004. In Canada, he was the Dean of the diplomatic corps for 14 years.
