Bamenda: Farmers Equipped For Fish Pond Construction

The gifts handed recently precede a modern fish centre to produce and distribute fingerlings
Aquaculture, a promising sector in the economy of Cameroon, is about to be revamped in the North West region with huge government and Islamic Bank investments to boost the fast growing industry. It is against this backdrop that on June 30, 2017, North West Governor, Adolphe Lele Lafrique handed over some equipment to 100 proximity framers, spread in 25 cooperative societies to help them rehabilitate and construct at least 1,500 earth ponds with an average area of 200m2 each.
The farmers, recruited from the entire region took home 3,000 pipes, 2,000 machetes, 2,000 pairs of rain boots, 2,000 pairs of gloves, 500 dig axes,500 spades, 500 shovels, 500 buckets, 300 wheel barrows and 100 decameter measuring tapes. The offer that was conceived and delivered to boost fish production was saluted by the farmers who are expected to construct and rehabilitate the ponds in three months. It was Nguti John, the team leader of the farmers who hailed the government and the Islamic Bank for supporting the 1,200 fish farmers of the region to increase ponds, improve production and enhance income generation for improved standards of livelihood.
