Orthopaedic Surgery : 17 Knees Operated Upon

This was during a week-long campaign at the Douala General Hospital, from August 11 to 14, 2025.
A team of medical professionals from the United States of America, led by Cameroonian-born Prof. Peter Kima, has been at the Douala General Hospital for a one-week orthopaedic knee surgery campaign. During the campaign, patients with knee complications received top-quality treatment and surgeries akin to those performed in America. The medical team, which included Prof. Petty Mark, Dr. Mary Kima, and other technical staff under the Cayhiti Foundation, aimed to ensure that the local team mastered the latest technologies in orthopaedic knee surgery. This marked the team's third visit to Cameroon to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and techniques.
Among the patients was 70-year-old Marie M., who expressed gratitude to the team, reporting that she felt well following her surgery.
According to Prof. Peter Kima, the goal of the Cayhiti Foundation is to support health education projects in middle-income countries. “We were attracted to Douala General Hospital because of its mission to develop excellence in various medical fields. One area of focus is total knee replacement surgery. To assist them, we have recruited additional companies and foundations in the United States to provide high-quality instruments and prostheses”, he stated. He emphasized the importance of equipping the hospital to handle surgeries of varying complexities and mentioned that local staff are being trained in different specialties. Prof. Kima hopes that after three years of their campaign, the local team will be well-equipped to perform surgeries.
